He Never Sleeps...

20 After leaving Succoth they camped at Etham on the edge of the desert. 21 By day the LORD went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night. 22 Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people. (Exodus 13)

He is Sovereign = always in control
He never sleeps = always watching
He always guides = never steering us astray.

I love this picture in Exodus 13.  God has just led the Isrealites out of Egypt, but they haven't really been tested yet.  In fact, the Egyptians are about to change their minds and pursue them.  And what do we see here?  We see God leading His people.  In the day time as a cloud, and at night as a pillar of fire.

I love that imagery; night can be a scary time.  It's dark, you can't see, and your other senses are heightened.  Things that normally wouldn't scare in in daylight become a little more scary at night.  And yet, there He is, as a pillar of fire, right in front of them leading them.

I read this portion of Scripture a couple of days ago and it caused me to stop and be reminded that Christ IN me = the same thing the Israelites had; full time 24/7 access to God, through Jesus.  His power, His strength, His guiding...He never sleeps, and he is both my leader and my rear-guard.

The questions for me are, do I trust Him?  Do I follow Him?  When He says "go," do I go?  When He says "don't be afraid, but 'cross the Red Sea' " to I hesitate, or do I trust?  You see it's easy for me to judge the Israelites and their fickleness...and yet I look at my own life and how often I hesitate and wonder if I'm any different?

"Oh Lord, today, let us take courage to follow your leading, in everything."
